A Conwy weightlifter is one of the latest members to book his seat on the plane to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games.

Former Ysgol Aberconwy student Harry Misangyi has been selected in the Welsh team for the Commonwealth Games in April to take part in weightlifting.

He found out about his selection at the end of last year, capping off what had been a bumpy 2017 for the 20 year-old.

Misangyi said: "My initial reaction was pure relief and excitement. 2017 was a very long year for much of I was injured. This was restricting to what training I could do, but I managed to do what was needed to secure my seat on the plane.

"This will be my first Commonwealth Games, but definitely not my last. I'm determined to do the best I can for Wales in the Gold Coast and really make

the most of the experience."

He has already had a feel for the arena where he will be competing on the Gold Coast having taken part in the Commonwealth Championships, a qualifying event for the games, last year.

Misangyi said: "This was a fantastic experience as it was in the same venue as the Games will be this year so I was able to really learn from it and get a taste of what's to come."

The 20 year-old attends the NW1 gym in Llandudno who now boast two Commonwealth Game athletes with Misangyi joining Holly Knowles on the plane to the Gold Coast.

This is just the third year he has been in the sport for having taken in up having heard about the NW1 gym through a PE teacher at school.

Misangyi, who is currently studying Sport Science at Bangor University, said: "He (PE teacher) described to my class a little about what they did at NW1 and how it was different to the typical gyms. I liked the sound and I had seen a bit of weightlifting on the TV before so I thought I would give it a go.

"From day one I loved it and since have never looked back."

He said the support from friends and families have helped him get to where he is today. His biggest supporter, his father will be on the plane with him to Australia in a few months, sharing the journey with his son.

The Commonwealth Games will take place on the Gold Coast, Australia, between April 4 and 15.
