Motorists reported delays of longer than an hour and a half to get out of a popular Llandudno retail park.

Visitors to Mostyn Champneys experienced “gridlock” on Wednesday and the issue looks set to continue as the works causing the problem are set to carry on until the end of next month.

Works are currently underway near traffic lights on the corner of Conway Road and Charlotte Road and are responsible for the closure of that particular exit.

Motorists are therefore left with one way out and forced to exit the carpark from Charlotte Road on to Mostyn Broadway, resulting in major delays.

Llandudno resident Phyllis Oliver said it took her an hour to get home, just around the corner from the retail park, on Wednesday and traffic was like “nothing she had ever seen”.

Mrs Oliver, contacting the Pioneer from her car, said: “It’s terrible. I’ve never been in this kind of situation in my life anywhere in the world. It’s gridlock here in Mostyn Champneys, no one can get out. It’s just chaos.”

Dave Johnson, who was on his way to Deganwy on Wednesday but was left waiting for more than an hour and a half.

A Conwy County Borough Council spokesperson said: “A traffic engineer made a site visit on Wednesday and advised the contractors on ways to improve traffic management in the area whilst the work is taking place.”

The spokesperson said once works are being completed to improve traffic flow out of Charlotte Road by providing clearer visibility at the junction, replacing the traffic light with a give way and installing a zebra crossing at a better location to improve pedestrian movement.

Motorists have said these delays will cause them to avoid the area for the next few weeks while works are ongoing.

Colwyn Bay resident David Thomas cares for his elderly mother, who lives in Penrhyn Bay and does a regular shop at Aldi in Mostyn Champneys.

The pair were left waiting for longer than half an hour, just before the worst of the gridlock on Wednesday and he said he will now be looking elsewhere to do his shopping.

He said: "I'm going to avoid that area totally for the next four weeks. I usually go shopping with my mum in Llandudno but if I need Aldi I'll just go to Old Colwyn now."

Drivers stuck in the gridlock took to social media last week to share their experiences.

Emma Jazmine, on the Pioneer Facebook page, said: "It was a nightmare! I was stuck for an hour and 15 minutes and had to arrange someone else to get the kids from school.

"It wasn't down to anyone apart from the road being closed off in one direction and everyone having to go the same way."

Debra Silcock said: "I won't be shopping there for next 6 weeks. Ridiculous planning. However if every one turned left at B and Q it would keep the traffic flowing a bit better. Crossing across both lanes that causes the hold up."
