Conwy Castle was bathed in purple light to celebrate International Women’s day last week.

About fifty members of the Gwynedd-Caernarfon Federation of Women's Institutes celebrated International Women's Day at the Guildhall in Conwy by invitation of the town Mayor Mr. Bill Chapman, berfore seeing the castle illuminated purple.

International Women's Day was designed to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Participants were welcomed with singing by local soprano Sian Roberts who is currently studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Mrs Barbara Lawson Reay then gave an illustrated talk on the women's suffrage movement in North Wales. After the talk Conwy Castle was lit up in purple, one of the colours of the suffrage movement, and also the colour of the international day.
