Llandudno's Beaches have been voted as some of the cleanest in the world by Keep Wales Tidy.

The West Shore Beach was awarded a Keep Wales Tidy Blue Flag and Seaside Award, while the North Shore obtained just the later.

The awards are handed to beaches considered clean, safe and have great facilities and water quality

Llandudno Mayor councillor Francis Davies said the Blue Flag was a real plus for the town receiving these awards.

Cllr Davies said: "It encourages people to come because they know it is safe for their children and themselves to go in the water. If you don't have a blue flag, it does deter those people from coming.

"It is a good sign our water is pure and clean."

Minister for tourism, culture and sport Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas was on hand for the presentation of the Blue Flag.

Lord Elis-Thomas said with Llandudno and North Wales being highly popular tourism spots - everyone one resident to three tourists in Wales - these awards would only increase the numbers coming into the town.

He said: "We've got 106 designated beaches in Wales and at last count everyone of them has very high water quality. What visitors like is clean beaches and clean water.

"Then they can enjoy themselves and relax. The traditional beach holiday is still something that tourists enjoy and we are blessed in Wales with more blue flag beaches per mile than anywhere in the UK."

Llanfiarfechan, Penmaenmawr and Rhos-on-Sea beaches were also awarded a Blue Flag and Seaside Award.

Kinmel Bay and Abergele Pensarn beaches claimed just a Seaside Award.
