The Conwy Quayside was overrun by pirates from all over the UK on the weekend.

Despite only having a short space of time to arrange the festival after the other Pirate Weekend was moved to Rhos-on-Sea a few months ago, organiser Toby Tunstall said it had been a fantastic weekend.

Mr Tunstall said: “There was an excellent turnout, we were delighted with the support we had and the quayside was full of pirates.

“The event was really good. It was a proper pirate festival with lots pots of pirates. We’ve had some fantastic feedback on social media already.”

People from all over the UK attended the event dressing as everything from mermaids and cabin boys to pirates and Davy Jones.

There was something for everybody with a pirate ship, smugglers market, crabbing competition, barrel race and a pirate lantern parade.

Mr Tunstall said the kids especially loved the event.

He said: “The faces of the little kids just lit up when they saw a pirate. It just brings it alive.”

Mr Tunstall and some of his friends took control of the original pirate festival 2018 after the annual event usually held in the town was moved to Rhos-on-Sea.

He was the original creator of the festival back in 2012 before HTC took it over a few years ago.

But now Mr Tunstall has created his own event once again it is here to stay. The success of this year’s event has already warranted a follow up with the original pirate festival 2019 set to be held on June 1 and 2 next year.

He said they already have a few special additions to the event planned for 2019.

One attendee, Steve Wurburton, on the event’s Facebook page, added: “Awesome. It was our first year but we’ll be back next year for sure.”
