The demolition is set to resume on a former Llandudno Hotel after work was stopped more than a year ago.

Work to demolish the Tudno Castle Hotel in Llandudno is set to resume on Monday, July 9 after work was halted last year.

Original plans were approved in 2014 which gave permission to redevelop The Tudno Castle Hotel including partial demolition work.

Work began early last year and the building was found to be in a worse condition than first thought so a new proposal was put to the Conwy County Borough Council's (CCBC) planning committee.

The new plan sought planing permission to demolition the remainder of the building and recreate the listed façade.

The CCBC planning committee and Cadw both approved the new plans and work is now set to begin in just under two weeks.

A new Tudno Castle Hotel will then be redevelopment to provide a 63 bedroom hotel, five restaurants and a space for a retail store.

Developer Opus North's James Farnaby said: "We are very pleased that the redevelopment of the Tudno Castle Hotel is finally getting underway. This will be a real asset to the town.

“We are working hard to ensure our works do not interfere with any local events and do not inconvenience people in the town.

“We have been happy to work with the Council to ensure the redevelopment is done properly, in line with all the rules, to retain the look of this important local building.”

CCBC cabinet member for economic development, councillor Louise Emery, said the site had become an "eyesore" and was excited to finally see something happen.

She added: “This is great news for Llandudno – the building has been such an eyesore at this important junction leading into the Town.

"I am very much looking forward to seeing the re-build of this hotel ultimately to provide much needed accommodation for the increasing number of tourists that visit Llandudno and the surrounding area”
