After nearly a year of planning Armed Forces Day is finally here.

More than 300,000 visitors and residents are expected to converge on Llandudno this Saturday for one of the biggest celebrations the town has ever seen.

The event will also be attended by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, with the potential for a visit from Prime Minister Theresa May - with UK Prime Ministers having attended every national Armed Forces Day event to date.

Beach raids, the Red Arrows, a frigate in the bay, Battle of Britain memorial flight, unarmed combat displays and RAF Falcons will be just some of the sites attendees will be able to catch a glimpse of and take part in on the day.

The national event, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018, is held as a thank you to the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, and veterans.

With such a large crowd expected the county is expecting a boost of about £4 million.

Conwy County Borough councillor Louise Emery, Cabinet Member for the Economy, said: “The economic benefit is obvious. There are going to be thousands of people here.

"The hotels are going to be absolutely rammed. The caravan and camp sites around this area are going to be very busy and the town itself—the cafes and the businesses, just the normal retail shops—are all going to benefit."

Cllr Liz Roberts is the Armed Forces Champion for Conwy County Borough Council, said, “We are delighted that Armed Forces Day is coming to Conwy county because it’s an opportunity for us to thank the serving soldiers of today and veterans.

“We’ve been doing lots of work for Conwy county for the Armed Forces over the last four years, and the national Armed Forces Day is just an ideal opportunity to demonstrate once again how much we support the work that they do."

Former Llandudno Mayor, councillor Francis Davies, said: "It is an honour to be able to hold this event, we beat off some strong competition from prominent towns and cities.

"We can't believe our luck to get this prestigious event in our town. I am really looking forward to it."

North Wales Police are offering a warm welcome to the thousands of visitors heading to Llandudno for National Armed Forces Day.

The policing operation is set to be amongst the largest in North Wales Police’s history and will involve over 500 North Wales Police officers and staff.

Superintendent Jane Banham, Silver Commander for the event, added: “On Saturday June 30th Llandudno will be honouring the work of our Armed Forces personnel as it hosts the national Armed Forces Day celebrations.

"We are proud to police National Armed Forces Day and are working closely with our partners to deliver a safe, secure and enjoyable event for all.

“The celebrations will be attended by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, senior political and military representatives, civic representatives and hundreds of service personnel, both Regular and Reserve – from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Cadets and Veterans.

“We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time and make sure the weekend is memorable for all the right reasons."

“Local residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to continue to be vigilant and help be our extra eyes and ears. If you see something that doesn’t look right, let us know and we will look into your concerns fully."

Guests at the event are also urged to be on the look out for a false charity that may be present on the day.

A false charity called Veterans Journey are expected to be in Llandudno on the weekend and will be selling a magazine at £3 each.

Anyone who comes in contact with these people are asked to call police.
