Nominations are now open to vote for the best athletes and sporting teams in Conwy county.

The annual Conwy Sports Awards are back again for another year.

They are designed to recognise and honour the talented sportspeople, clubs, coaches and volunteers in the county.

They serve to recognise the residents, young and old, that show dedication to perform at the highest level or those who work tirelessly to support individuals or clubs week in, week out, through their chosen sport.

Categories open for voting are: junior sportsman and woman; young volunteer; special achievement; senior sportsman and woman; senior sports team and coach; services to sport and event of the year.

The county boasts a number of competitors in numerous sports competing on a national and international stage.

Past winners have included Deganwy rower Becca Chin and Colwyn Bay’s international squash star Emily Whitlock.

Chin, 25, competed at the 2008 Paralympics in athletics.

She has since won a silver medal in the 2015 World Rowing Championships with Team GB along with a gold and silver at 2017 World Cup Rowing Regatta events.

Whitlock currently holds the world squash ranking of 23, having reached a previous high of 12.

Across her career she has collected 15 Professional Squash Association (PSA) tour titles.

The awards event was established in 1990 under the Colwyn Council administration.

It steadily grew in stature and in 1996 it evolved to become the Conwy County Borough Awards.

In 1998 the awards ceremony was relocated to a bigger venue, namely the North Wales Conference Centre, Llandudno.

The event moved again to Venue Cymru in 2006.

Sporting stars to attend the event over the years have included Mark Hughes, Rupert Moon, Derek Redmond, Nicole Cooke, Non Stanford and Steve Parry.

Nominations for the 2018 awards can be made at www.conwy.gov.uk/en/Resident/Leisure-sport-and-health/Leisure-Development/Sports-Awards-2018.aspx, with entries closing on Friday, September 21.

The awards ceremony will be held at Venue Cymru on Friday, November 23.
