THE Aberconwy branch of the NHS retirement fellowship celebrated the 70th anniversary of the NHS with a party at West Shore Baptist church hall, Llandudno.

Beryl Shields, aged 94, the oldest member of the fellowship, had the honour of cutting the birthday cake, at the party which also celebrated 30 years of the fellowship's existence.

She started her career at the Abergele Chest Hospital in 1942, aged 16. It was run then by the City of Manchester Council. In 1947 she moved to the Llandudno Fever Hospital to nurse there and then later to the Llandudno General Hospital, with a break, from 1953 to 1966, to have a family, she finally retired in in 1984.
