A CELEBRATION of our nearest cosmic neighbour will head the bill of this September's LLAWN festival.

The annual free arts weekend in Llandudno, now in its sixth year, will be headed by the Museum of the Moon exhibition, featuring NASA imagery of the moon’s surface set to music composed by Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.

Karine Décorne of Migrations, the organisation behind the moon, said: “LLAWN06 might be one small step for man but our arts activities are a giant leap for Llandudno.

Museum of the Moon, to be displayed in St John’s Church, has travelled the world, thrilling audiences along the way.

This promises to be a mixture of moonlight and music which will be heavenly for Llandudno.”

Organisers of LLAWN06 have lifted the lid on a packed itinerary of art installations, with the theme of Cultural Ecology, including a trip back in time with the arrival of Boudicca of the Wheelabouts street theatre troupe, touring Llandudno in a Roman Chariot built from a mobility scooter.

Joining the Celtic queen will be award-winning sound artist Ray Lee, who will showcase his monumental outdoor interactive sound sculpture 'Ring out' to town, creating an entrancing concert reminiscent of a peel of bells, delivered by loudspeakers housed in eight, giant high metal towers.

As befitting the festival's tradition - which saw a tentacled monster take over Mostyn street last year - a sea monster will take to the coastline, joining Old Colwyn’s TAPE Community Music & Filmm transforming the shoreline with beach huts housing a variety of art installations.

An exhibition of painting, sculptures, drawing and photography – She sees the shadows – will be installed at MOSTYN with over 40 contemporary artists from London-based David Roberts Art Collection re-examining familiar objects and materials in unexpected ways.

The gallery will also host artist Chris Lewis-Jones, of Nu-Urban Gardeners, with participants helping to create a piece of artwork.

MOSTYN director, Alfredo Cramerotti, said: “We're really pleased to be working with a number of artists and organisations to bring fantastic art and performance to the streets of Llandudno again this year.

"LLAWN festival is a joyful celebration of contemporary art and the many ways in which it can be enjoyed - there's something for everyone."

Culture Action Llandudno (CALL) will welcome visitors once again to explore the town’s lost spaces through installations, digital art, prints and performance by over 30 regional artists which will shine a light on buildings untouched for years.

Sabine Cockrill, director of CALL said: “The curatorial theme this year is ‘Cultural Ecology’, looking at our environment, the sea, our lands, the planets.

But we are also looking at how culture plays a vital part in our towns and region and at how we can support this ecology of artists to continue thriving. There will be so much to explore and discover and we’ll be lifting the lid on more activities as we move forward.”

The event will run from Friday, September 14 until Sunday16 throughout a variety of venues in the town including the promenade, promenade shelters, Venue Cymru, John Street, Vaughan Street, Haus on 26 Augusta Street, the Holy Trinity Church, St John’s Church and the Tabernacle.
