Preparations for the 2019 National Eisteddfod in Conwy are gathering pace.

The cultural event will be held in Llanrwst from August 2 to 10.

This upcoming Monday, August 6, a ceremony will be held in Cardiff, where this year’s event is taking place, to hand over the Tlws yr Eidalwyr trophy which represents the responsibility for hosting the event.

Conwy County will also be promoted to potential visitors on the maes.

Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) cabinet member, cllr Garffild Lloyd Lewis, said: “We’re delighted that the Eisteddfod is coming to Conwy County.

"To have the Eisteddfod in our county is not only important economically, but in terms of culture and Welsh Language – it’s vital.

“We hope Conwy County residents, of all ages, will be enthusiastic and take the opportunity to be a part of this fantastic National event in 2019.”

The festival typically attracts around 150,000 visitors a week to the maes where there are 250 exhibitors and stalls alongside the traditional competitions.

Eisteddfod staff have already met with Conwy council staff to prepare for the event.

Llanrwst county councillor, Aaron Wynne, said: “The county-wide effort to raise the funds needed to hold the Conwy County National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst in 2019 is well underway. Communities from Llanfairfechan to Ysbyty Ifan, from Kinmel Bay to Capel Garmon are all playing a vital role in ensuring that next year’s festival will be a success.

“Eisteddfod officers and Conwy Council staff have already met in preparation for next year. We are working closely with the local executive committee and other relevant authorities in a concerted effort to plan the week-long festival and help with logistics.

“I look forward to Llanrwst, the Conwy Valley and the whole of Conwy County coming together as one to celebrate Wales’ greatest cultural talent here in my home town.”
