Rhos-on-Sea rally driver Matt Edwards currently sits top of the British Rally Championship (BRC) at the half way point of the season.

Having finished third in the race for the championship last year Edwards, and co-driver Darren Garrod, are looking to go two better this year.

But, in an interview with the Pioneer, Edwards said he is taking things one rally at a time.

He said: "The ambition is always there to win the championship, so hopefully we can keep going the way we have been.

"It's been good, but we are just taking it bit by bit.

"We seem to be going faster without even trying which is good, but that is simply from spending more time in the car and becoming more familiar with it. Things are becoming more fluent and more natural."

The pair have enjoyed two wins from as many races in the 2018 season after round one was called off.

Edwards and Garrod have registered 50 points and are 20 points clear of their nearest rivals Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin.

Not only are they leading the BRC they are also top of the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association (BTRDA) having recorded three wins and a second from five races in this championship.

He is equal top of the BTRDA championship with Russ Thomas, both drivers on 120 points.

This season has seen Edwards take part in seven races for five wins.

Edwards heads to Ireland next for the Ulster Rally on August 17 and 18. The final race of the BRC season will be Wales Rally GB which takes place in his home county of Conwy.

He was involved in the filming of a promotional video at ZipWorld and the Slate Mines recently but said his mind hadn't turned to his home rally just yet.

He added: "Obviously it is a big thing for me. But as it's at the end of the year, it is not on my mind yet, there are a lot of other things that I have to think about before then.

"I've just got to keep taking it one rally at a time. But it would be great to be in a position to well in my home race."
