A listed Edwardian school building is set to be turned into social housing.

The Ysgol Maelgwn site in Llandudno Junction will see 26 new social housing homes built.

The plans would mean there would be 10 specialist housing units at the main school building with another 16 homes built on the grounds.

The former primary school closed last year as it was amalgamated with Ysgol Nant y Coed to form a new £11.5m super school for the town at Ysgol Awel y Mynydd which opened in September.

Officers have recommended that councillors vote to grant planning permission and Cadw be informed of the plans so they can get permission to work on the listed building.

Although a decision could be deferred as more information is sought on how the development would effect the building. Concerns have been raised that changes to the windows of the school building would not be appropriate for the grade II listed building.

Conservation officers have asked for more details on the proposed changes to the windows and the roof before permission is granted.

A report on the plans before councillors said: “The main considerations of this application are impact on the listed buildings and nature conservation.

“Considerable importance and weight must be given to the statutory requirement and primary material consideration to have special regard to the desirability of preserving the listed buildings, their setting or any features of special architectural or historic interest which they possess.

“Officers concur with the Conwy Conservation Officer and Ancient Monument Society that further assessment and consideration is required for the design details and impact on the listed buildings including architectural features, materials, construction method of the alteration and conversion works.”
