An elderly Rhos-on-Sea man said he feels "lucky to be alive" after falling from his bike in Llandudno.

Gavin Pike, 85, had to be airlifted to Stoke Hospital by the Welsh Air Ambulance after falling from his electric bicycle in Mostyn Champneys.

Speaking to the Pioneer, he said he still has no recollection if the incident or what happened.

Mr Pike said: "I still have no idea how it all happened.

"One minute I was riding on my new electronic bicycle towards Halford's in Llandudno on a Sunday morning in mid-July and the next thing I knew I woke up in Stoke on Trent University Hospital with nine stitches in my head and numerous lesser cuts and bruises over other parts of my body.

"My wife Sheila and son Ian (who lives in Lymm, Cheshire) were standing over me explaining how I had been flown down by helicopter and how it all appeared to have happened."

After a week in Stoke Hospital he was taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital, when a bed became available, where he spent a further five days before returning home to Rhos-on-Sea.

Mr Pike said: "I do feel lucky for being alive though I am still incredibly tired, very weak in the legs, eating badly and sleeping very heavily."

He said a big thank you had to be made to the countless people that stopped to help him while lying on the ground in Mostyn Champneys.

Without them, Mr Pike said, he may not have made it to Stoke Hospital.

He added: "Obviously I owe a great deal to the numerous people in the shopping mall particularly the staff of Sports Direct, busy shoppers and casual visitors who fortunately included two nurses who helped me in numerous ways."

While still in poor health Mr Pike said he is making a slow recovery following the incident.
