Even on their days off St John Cymru volunteers are willing to step in and save people's lives.

Sioned Williams, 28, had a day off from work - on what was one of the hottest days of the year - when she saw the unresponsive man lying on the floor in Llandudno.

Recalling the incident, Ms Williams said: “I rushed over to see the man who had already been put in the recovery position.

“I could see from his colour something wasn’t quite right. He looked pale and had a blue tinge to his face and wasn't breathing."

Sioned, a clinical support worker, called for help and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

She said: "I had been performing CPR for around five minutes before a passer-by stopped and helped with compressions.

“Eventually someone brought over an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and I placed it on the casualty. It advised not to shock so I continued to perform CPR."

Ms Williams performed CPR for over 15 minutes when paramedics arrived and took the man to hospital.

She said: “It was exhausting. The hot weather made it really difficult but I kept thinking, at the very least I wanted to give him enough time for his family to say goodbye. This definitely motivated me to carry on."

The unnamed man had experienced a cardiac arrest. It was later found he had made a full recovery.

Ms Williams had learned her life saving first aid skills three years ago and has practised them regularly at her local St John Cymru division in Llandudno.

She said: “I joined St John Cymru to further my experience within the healthcare sector.

“Had I not done this, I definitely wouldn’t have known what first aid treatment to give on that day.

“I can’t thank them enough for the support they have given me since I started volunteering with them.”

As St John Cymru marks its centenary and launches it's ‘Save a Life September’, the first aid charity took the chance to look back at Ms Williams' life saving measures and similar stories from around the Wales.

This September St John Cymru is looking to create 5,000 potential lifesavers. Each year, the nation’s leading first aid charity offers free two-hour training sessions across Wales which teach people simple techniques which could one day help to save someone’s life.
