A COLLEGE tutor has enjoyed a week-long trip to Malaysia.

Kinmel Bay resident, Joseph Owen, programme leader for the 3D Animation and Games Development degree course at Coleg Llandrillo, visited Malaysia on behalf of the group.

He was given tours of several academies and shared information on how Grŵp Llandrillo Menai operates.

Mr Owen was a guest of Teck Yeong Ng, who leads a network of innovative colleges in Malaysia.

After a successful fact-finding mission, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is now looking forward to welcoming students from Malaysia from the start of the 2019-2020 academic year.

Mr Owen, who is a computer science graduate, but moved over to the field of games development as “it was more fun”, said on his return to the UK: “I was invited to visit a variety of colleges and academies to look into the standard of the work produced.

"This was to see if the students in Malaysia would be able to come on to our 3D Animation degree course upon completion of their Level 3-equivalent studies.

“I spent seven days there, being shown around institutions from the very south, bordering Singapore, to the north, which shares its border with Thailand.

"Overall I was impressed with the work produced – and the food! – and the passion shown by the staff and students.

“It really is a beautiful country and I look forward to going back again when I can."

The games industry was valued at more than £5 billion in 2017 and employs in excess of 12,000 people in the UK.
