The new 4G all-weather pitch has been opened at Parc Eirias.

Minister for culture, tourism and sport, Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, visited Colwyn Bay last week to officially open the new pitch.

The minister was joined by members of the Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) - including the chairperson - and a variety of guests.

Lord Elis-Thomas said: “The pitch is a very welcome addition to the wealth of top class indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities in North Wales and will no doubt contribute to the growth of sport in the region.

"Good quality, modern facilities play a huge part in encouraging more people to get active and it’s an honour to be here at beautiful Eirias.”

The full-sized pitch will be used for both football and rugby by local community clubs and schools and the surface will ensuring games can be played in all weather conditions.

It will also provide a training resource for North Wales regional teams while helping to ease demands on the main arena pitch within Stadiwm ZipWorld.

Cllr Louise Emery, CCBC cabinet member, said: “This superb new pitch complements and enhances the existing facilities in Parc Eirias - a high quality resource that will encourage, and enable, greater participation in physical activity.”

"During design and planning particular attention was paid to environmental impact; bat boxes were installed, and twenty-four trees will be planted to replace, and add to, trees removed during construction.

“As part of our on-going work in Eirias, we’re working with Friends of Eirias Park to ensure the wider park is a great environment and green space for all Conwy residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Work has been going on the pitch since April and concluded

Contractors McArdle Sport Tec have been working on the site, located adjacent to the boating lake, since April.

A 4G pitch is an artificial surface, like a 3G version except without the rubber crumbing.

The 4G pitch has been funded via Welsh Government Sports Facilities Capital Loan Scheme; All Wales Sports Collaboration Fund; WRU Facilities Grant; Welsh Government Vibrant and Viable Places; and Conwy County Borough Council.
