THERE is a new Wizard in town and he is hoping Conwy will fall under his spell.

Conwy Chamber of Trade have named award winning magician Jay Gatling as the official Conwy Tournament Wizard; the tournament is coming to the town in June. The historical re-enactment event will feature a “throng” of knights, nobles, Vikings, musicians, actors, jugglers, merchants and jesters.

Jay, a Llandudno based magician, received news of his prestigious title this week and swiftly tweeted images of his new wizarding robes.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it. The news came completely out of the blue.

“Wizards have always played an important role in history and folklore. Being chosen to be the official wizard of the largest medieval event Wales has ever seen during the Year of Legends is truly an honour.”

Russel Erwood, tournament co-organiser who is known in the area as Erwyd le Fol – the Conwy Jester - said: “Legendary wizards, like Merlin from the Mabinogion, have appeared in Welsh folk stories for hundreds if not thousands of years and we felt that we should continue this tradition by appointing our own legendary wizard.

“We were inundated with applications from entertainers wishing to take part, but of all the acts there was one that stood and that was Jay.”

Jay will perform numerous shows throughout the two-day event in Conwy Town – taking place on June 24 and June 25 - as well as demonstrating close-up “miracles” that will make visitors question the natural laws of physics.

Jay added: “I’ve not decided exactly what I’ll be performing at The Tournament. In the past I’ve linked solid metal rings, made objects appear and disappear, read minds and have even made furniture fly. So anything is possible.”

The Tournament is a free event in Conwy town. As well as their newly appointed wizard, the event will be home to over 300 re-enactors, jousting knights, travelling fools, minstrels and Erwyd le Fol himself.
