TRAFFIC chaos hit the region on Thursday after torrential downpours across North Wales.

Road and rail disruption hit as Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey saw some of the heaviest rainfall with the A55 closed in both directions between J11 Llandygai and J12 Tal-y-bont.

Hundreds of motorists faced hours of misery after being stranded on the expressway and diversions were put in place westbound off the A55 at Black Cat Roundabout, Llandudno Junction via the A5 to Bangor and likewise eastbound from Bangor.

Roads throughout the region of south Gwynedd spreading east towards the Conwy Valley were effected including the A5 near Bethesda and the Conwy Tunnel.

Three rest centres were opened in Llandudno Junction Leisure Centre, Caernarfon Leisure Centre, Ysgol Friars Bangor, to offer shelter and refreshments to those who were stranded and unable to complete their journey.

Rail services between Bangor and Llandudno Junction were hit and services were halted between Llanfairpwll and Bodorgan due to flooding.

Winds of up to 110mph were reported and rainfall in Valley reached 42mm on Thursday.
