PLANS for a £40million supermarket development have been given the green light.

Conygar Investment Company PLC has submitted plans for a supermarket, petrol filling station and four restaurant units on the former Old Brickworks site behind Cineworld in Llandudno Junction.

Conwy County Council's planning committee  approved the plans.

The move is expected to create 300 jobs.

The supermarket is set to provide parking for 676 vehicles, with an additional 470 spaces for the cinema and new restaurant facilities.

It will also see the relocation of Pizza Hut and the construction of three more restaurants.

Conwy Town Council raised objections over the potential risk of landfill gas and toxicity affecting proposed food outlets as well as concerns over safety of access at the A55 roundabout.

Representations were received by Conwy Council from Mostyn Estates Ltd, Llandudno Retail Park, McDonalds, KFC and Wm Morrison Supermarkets.

Concerns were raised over loss of employment land and the threat to town centres and diversion of trade from Llandudno, Llandudno Junction and Colwyn Bay.
