MORE than £2,000 has been raised to help a farmer following a devastating fire that destroyed a barn.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Llanrhos, off Colwyn Road, at about 5pm on Saturday. Although the fire was brought under control by 6pm on Sunday about £10,000 worth of hay was damaged as well as machinery.

A 13-year-old boy has been interviewed in connection with the incident.

Brynaiu Farm is home to more than 200 cattle, 50 breeding ewes, 50 rams and goats.

So far £2,100 has been raised for Brynaiu Farm through a JustGiving page by kind-hearted community members.

Hollie Williams, a friend of the family who own the farm, who helped launch the fundraising effort to help purchase feed for the animals, said: “The response has been mindblowing.

“Llandudno is such a small town, the community spirit is amazing, everyone rallies around to help.

“They have to stock up for winter and they’ve lost it all. What got me most was the temperature has dropped and the animals need the food for warmth. ”

Liza Carlisle, partner of Gareth Howatson, who has been tenant of Brynaiu Farm since 2008 and worked for the previous tenant for more than 20 years, said: “Gareth was there doing his calves and could see a flame.

“He phoned 999 and by the time he ran round the fire was getting bigger. Within two minutes it was all ablaze.

“What was once a 60ft barn brimming with hay and straw to get us through the winter is mountains of ruined hay, still smoldering.

"We want to say thank you to all the people who have donated and helped. Hollie Williams especially for setting up the online campaign. Hollie and I went to school together.

“The hay alone was £10,000 without the barn costs.

“All money will be going straight to the hay and straw merchants.”

A North Wales Police spokesman said an investigation was under way.

The donation site – – will be open until Sunday
