THE Times has included Llandudno Pier in its list of “six of the best British piers” article published today (June 27).

Included alongside piers in Cromer, Blackpool, Brighton, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Southend-on-Sea, The Times mentions Llandudno Pier’s “landward end” as a particular highlight.

It says of Llandudno Pier: “The longest of Wales’s seven remaining piers, Llandudno is one of the few in the nation still serving its original purpose as a landing stage for ships, with annual visits from the PS Waverley — the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world.

“Entry is through a town of souvenir shops, food stands, ice cream outlets and a store selling Aber Falls Welsh whisky.

“Beyond this shoreside huddle the prom is bare and often windswept until you reach the deck at the end, where the old bandstand is now an amusement arcade.

“The highlight, though, is back at the landward end, where robot fortune teller Zoltar the Gypsy will predict your future with eerie inaccuracy.

“Stay at the Elm Tree Hotel, where the rooms provide fantastic sea views of the Llandudno sunset.”

Llandudno Pier, stretching for 700 metres, is the longest of its kind in Wales, and opened to the public on August 1, 1877.

The pier had its origins in a much shorter, wooden pier erected in 1858 as part of the planned St George’s Harbour.

In 2005, the Pier was voted the Pier of the Year by the National Piers Society, and in 2015 was bought for £4.5 million by its current owners, Tir Prince Leisure Group.

Paul Williams, Llandudno Pier general manager, said: “We are extremely proud to make the list of top six piers in the UK, as detailed in The Times newspaper.

"This wouldn’t be possible without all the hard work that is carried out all year round from our various teams, from the maintenance lads, through to all our retail, F&B and arcade staff; it really is a team effort.

"I would also like to thank the local community for their continued support you show us all year round."
