A YOUNG tennis ace from Colwyn Bay dominated the draw to take home a prestigious title in Beijing.

Viktor Frydrych, who was the fifth seed, claimed the Beijing ITF J300 U18’s competition last weekend.

After battling past players from Switzerland, Italy, China and Russia, Viktor was able to capture the U18 Boys singles title - defeating fellow GB player and eighth seed Benjamin Gusic Wan in the final.

Following the win, the 17-year-old also rose to no. 56 in the ITF World Junior Rankings.

Another Welsh player, Mimi Xu, took home both the singles and doubles title at the same tournament.

Hoping to continue their success, both players will be competing in the ITF J500 event in Osaka, Japan this week.

Chris Lewis, head of performance at Tennis Wales, said: “We would like to wish many congratulations to both Mimi and Viktor.

“Their successes both on and off the court continue to inspire young players in Wales, the wider UK, and beyond.

“From Mimi’s beginnings at Swansea Tennis Centre, to Viktor’s first sessions at Colwyn Bay, we knew they had potential — and here they are championing Welsh tennis across the globe.

“We couldn’t be prouder to see them flying the flag for Wales and wish them all the best for their upcoming matches. Pob lwc in Osaka!”
