IMMEDIATE attention is needed at a Llandudno day nursery after a care inspection said some areas were “not safe”.

Kiddies Corner, a children’s day care nursery at 35 Bryniau Road, Llandudno, was visited by Care Inspectorate Wales on October 25, with a report published in December.

The nursery caters for 38 children, with both English and Welsh language provision – the company runs another nursery at Llewelyn Avenue.

The report into the nursery praised staff for ensuring children are safe, and said that children were “settled well”.

However, criticism was levelled at the nursery’s environment, in that some areas were unsafe, risk assessments were not always completed, and hazards were not always managed well, which it said required “immediate attention”.

The care inspectorate issued a priority action notice for a number of “serious issues” at the nursery, including signs of decay on outdoor decking areas, sleeping arrangements for children posing “possible risk of harm to them”, and people running the setting “not ensuring that the staff provide care, equipment and activities that support the children's play, learning and development”.

The report rated Kiddies Corner ‘adequate’ for wellbeing and leadership and management, but its care and development and environment were rated ‘poor’.

One improvement was recommended by the inspectorate:

  • Organize the outdoor classroom and the pre-school rooms in order to give more of choice for the children and to improve their learning opportunities

A summary of the report stated: “Children have some choices and can communicate effectively. They settle well and like to play with their friends. Children enjoy the activities available and they have some opportunities to follow their interests. They develop certain skills through their play and learn them.

“Staff implement effective policies and procedures to ensure that the children are safe. On the whole, they follow the appropriate procedures in order to keep the children healthy.

“Staff interact with the children appropriately. They have some planning and tracking procedures in action to support the children's development but this is not always appropriate or effective.

“Some areas of the environment are safe. However, risk assessments are not always carried out and they are not implemented effectively to ensure that all the hazards are identified or managed well.

“Some areas of the environment are well maintained and they present a welcoming area for the children. However, some areas were not safe and they need immediate attention. There are some resources and learning areas for the children.

“The people who run the setting ensure that policies and procedures are in place and are updated. The self-evaluation process is carried out and sometimes leads to appropriate improvements being made.

“Positive relationships are fostered with the parents as information can be shared.”
