CONWY has applied to its own planning department seeking permission to extend a historic grade-two listed Llanrwst primary school – and add solar panels to the building’s roof.

The council wants to develop Ysgol Bro Gwydir on Watling Street in Llanrwst.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the school will see an extension to its northwest elevation of the existing extension, and as part of the plans, sixty-two solar panels will also be added to the roof.

The proposals include ‘anodised aluminium rain screen’ to match the existing extension.

But Gwynedd Archaeological Trust has been asked by Conwy County Council to carry out a heritage impact assessment in advance as the proposed work to the already existing extension is adjacent to both the infant and junior schools.

Both school buildings, as well as the schoolhouse, date back to the 19th century and are grade-two listed with heritage guardians CADW.

Watling Street is also partly within the Llanrwst Conservation Area.

Conwy has also consulted the town council, as well as several heritage groups, including the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, the council for British Archaeology (Wales), The Georgian Group, The Victorian Society, The Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings, and The Joint Committee of the National Amenity Societies.

The council also consulted its own conservation officer, who does not object to the plans.

The application is due to be discussed by a committee at a meeting at Conwy’s Bodlondeb HQ on Wednesday.
