TRIBUTES have been paid to a dedicated teacher who devoted 37 years to "shaping minds and nurturing creativity."

Martin O’Leary, 67, who spent nearly four decades teaching at St David’s College in Llandudno, was from Penmaenmawr and lived in Trefriw with his family.

He died at St David's Hospice on Thursday, April 4 2024

He was married to Heather and had children Michelle, Matthew, Aiden and Molly. He was also grandfather to Chloe, Dominic and Leon.

St David's College said Martin will "never be forgotten" and "the school will not be quite the same again".

They described Mr O’Leary as a very clever and inspirational teacher.

Andy Russell, headteacher, said: “Mr O'Leary was a dedicated Design and Technology teacher who devoted 37 years of service to shaping minds and nurturing creativity.

“At 67, his legacy is immeasurable, marked by countless projects, innovations, and most importantly, lives touched.

“Martin was not just an educator but a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration to many. His passion for teaching and unwavering commitment to students’ success has left an indelible mark on our school and on the hearts of all who had the privilege of walking through his classroom door.

“As we mourn this profound loss, we also celebrate a remarkable life dedicated to education and the empowerment of young minds.”

Mr O’Leary helped countless young people to become architects, product designers and engineers.

A spokesperson for St David's College said: "He was a hugely enthusiastic about encouraging girls to go into traditionally male dominated careers such as engineering. Always inspirational.

"He also had a brilliantly, dry sense of humour."

A current Year 13 DT pupil said: “We always looked forward to Mr O’Leary’s lessons as he very often had us in stitches. He always helped us when we struggled and he always had a suggestion how to improve our designs.

“I wish he could see our A Level projects as I think he’d be impressed to see how far we have come. We all miss him.”

Mr O’Leary's funeral service will be held on Friday, April 19 at 1.15pm at St Paul's Church, Craig-y-Don. This will be followed by a private committal at Colwyn Bay Crematorium.

Tea and coffee will be served at St Paul’s Church Hall following the funeral service for all who attend.

The school has also organised a wake for Old Davideans and staff at the St George’s Hotel, Llandudno.

The spokesperson added: "Here, we can share memories and stories of our much loved 'Mr O'."

Mr O’Leary's family will be attending a small private wake elsewhere after his committal at the crematorium.
