A CONWY kayaker is flying the British flag at the sport's Freestyle World Championship in Switzerland.

Five-time British champion Lowri Davies, 23, from Llanddoged near Llanrwst, is competing in her first senior world competition which runs from September 1 to 6 after spending two months training in Norway.

Aberystwyth University graduate Lowri said: "Having worked really had for the past five years juggling my commitments to university and the GB Team, I am really looking forward to the opportunity to paddling in my first World Championships as a senior.

"Training has been going well and the wave is great fun. I'd like to thank my sponsors who have helped me to get here, Plain Lazy, PGL, Palm Equipment and Square Rock.

"I first got into kayaking through my parents who both used to enjoy paddling the rivers of North Wales since they were at university themselves.

"I first got in a kayak when I was about eight years old, but back then the boats were massive and I found the difficult to manoeuvre. Then by the time I was 14, the boat designs had gotten small and I had gotten bigger and stronger and I was able to throw the boat around a bit more so I joined the local canoe club and went paddling as much as possible.

"At the age of 16 I competed in my first competition and six months later was representing the country at the World Championships in Spain.

Freestyle kayaking involves competitors surfing a river wave and performing gymnastic tricks with their kayaks, similar to freestyle BMX, skating or skiing.
