CHAINSAW-WIELDING vandals have outraged walkers by destroying a 50-year-old tree to make firewood.
Wardens at Bryn Euryn, Rhos on Sea, claim a healthy Silver Birch was chopped down by youngsters, who were trying to make a night-time fire. Walkers were disgusted to find that the tree had been axed to the ground. They claim the area surrounding the scene, in the lower meadow, was littered with empty bottles and cans of alcohol.
Concerns were raised at a recent meeting of the newly formed Bryn Users’ Association, made up of residents and walkers.
Neil Moran, a member of the group, said: “We are simply appalled by this destruction. I just don’t believe such damage could take place, they are unthinking vandals.”
The reserve has hit headlines recently, when nature lovers were left angered by plans to introduce livestock and fencing to parts of the Bryn.
Alun Jones, Countryside Warden at Bryn Euryn, said believed vandals had used a chainsaw and said there had been problems with youths accessing the grounds at night and creating fires.
He said: “They normally cut down small branches. I am not happy, they should have more respect. They leave cans on the floor and I have to clean it up.
“There are also safety issues, they must have used a chainsaw to do the damage they did and they could have done themselves an injury. If walkers see any damage they need to report it to the police, as they will not know that there is a problem.”
