CHESTER’S champion gymnast Beth Tweddle has been nominated in this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award and she needs your support.

The Leader is urging people to back World Champion gymnast Beth Tweddle, from Bunbury in this year’s final, which will be shown on BBC One, at 7pm on Sunday.

The 24-year-old was nominated after winning gold at the World Championships at London’s O2 Arena.

The former Queen’s School Chester pupil, told the Leader: “ I never dreamt that a gymnast would be recognised in a competition as big as this.”

The star gymnast, who has deferred her physiotherapy degree studies for two years to concentrate on gymnastics, will step up training in the new year in preparation for the European Championships in April and the World Championships in September.

Beth, who has devoted her life to gymnastics since the age of seven, is hopeful that she will stay fit and qualify for the London Olympics in 2012.

The Leader is urging Chester residents to get behind their local sports star by voting for Beth during the live show on Sunday.

Voting only be available by phone – the number to call for each contender will be revealed on the programme after 7pm.

The result will be announced before the end of the programme at 9pm.

That is surely naive, urging all locals to vote for their respective residents. How would you feel if all Londoners voted for David Haye
