Manchester United and former Wales football star Ryan Giggs was last night named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2009.
The 36-year-old’s achievement crowned a magnificent year in which he won a record 11th Premier League title, played in the Champions League final and was named PFA Player of the Year.
His latest success also came hot on the heels of being named BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year
Formula 1 champion Jenson Button was second and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis secured third spot at the awards in Sheffield.
Chester gymnast Beth Tweddle was also on the shortlist.
Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros, who is recovering from a brain tumour, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award; the Ashes-winning England cricketers were named Team of the year; and Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt claimed the Overseas trophy .
