HAVE YOUR SAY: Stuck in woods

AN OLD COLWYN beauty spot has been deemed hazardous by disability rights campaigners.

Members of the Conwy Voluntary Access Group called for signage to be displayed on safe access points at nature area, Fairy Glen. Campaigners claim disabled people have become stuck in woodland.

John Barton, who is a member of the access group and whose wife Judith uses a wheelchair, said: “We have requested that certain signs are put up to inform people of safe access points. There are some steep points, people in wheelchairs and people in mobility scooters have got stuck.

“They have only got out, because they have had people with them who have turned their wheelchairs or scooters around. If they got stuck they could be down there for hours and in some parts it is hard to get a signal on your mobile phone,” he added.

The group, which meets at Mochdre Sports Association each month, submitted a letter to Colwyn Bay Town Council earlier this month in a bid to make the area safe.

According to Old Colwyn councillor, Brian Cossey, the Fairy Glen Management Committee will be consulted and the town council hopes to create signs at the site.

He said: “I agree that it should be signposted. It is something that you don’t really think about and it is great that they have brought it to our attention. After the meeting takes place the signs could be put up by spring time.”

The council has started work on a special path in the woodland, which has a smooth surface for people with disabilities. Cllr Cossey said the town council has worked with the access group to transform paths.

Mr Barton, who lives in Mochdre and visits the beauty spot with his wife, said dangerous areas include the access point to Fairy Glen from Parciau Close and Coed Coch Road.

He said: “It has a really steep gradient and it is impossible to access the woods. Signs would make a big difference.

“It is about giving people equal rights to enjoy nature. Even if people suffer from visual impairment, it is still nice for them to get out into the fresh air, hear the birds and enjoy nature. ”
