A LANDMARK Deganwy hotel which has closed its doors for good has been mourned as “a massive loss” for the community.

The historic Deganwy Castle Hotel which lies in the heart of the village on Station Road is currently locked up, with a hand-written sign stating ‘Closed’.

According to workers at the hotel, the closure is permanent.

The prominent building has been an integral part of community events in the village for years, including the Deganwy Festival and the Boxing Day Dip; as well as a meeting point for various local groups.

Conwy County Borough Councillor for Deganwy, Jason Weyman, was deeply saddened to see it close.

He said: “They have done a hell of a lot for the village and the community. It's a massive loss and a big gaping hole in the middle of the village.”

Cllr Weyman visited the hotel on Monday afternoon where the closure was confirmed.

“I went around yesterday at 2pm and there was a sign on the door saying Staff Party. But it wasn’t a staff party because the staff were outside looking very depressed. I spoke to some of them who confirmed it was closing, but could not say much more than that.”

Rumours the 17th century listed building was set to shut were circulating in Deganwy in 2008, when it was believed a housing development was going to be built on the land.

But manager of the hotel, Dennis Chin, stated at the time there were no such plans in effect, and rather than closing he was in the process of drawing up an improvement plan for the site which was put on hold as the recession started to strike.

Although it is unknown what will now happen to the site, Cllr Weyman hoped it would remain a place for the local residents to come together.

He added: “Even if it’s not a hotel, it needs to be something there for the community - even if it's just a bar and restaurant. It’s the place for people to go as a pub; as their regular.

“The last thing we want is an empty space. We would welcome any development with a meeting point for the community.”

Management at the Deganwy Castle Hotel were unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.

It's a real shame the venue has closed. It was always a friendly welcoming place used by locals and offered consistently good quality meals. The staff seemed to stay for significant periods of time so that you got to know them and always provided a good service. However, in my opinion there has been a noticable decline over the last 12 months or so. Nevertheless, I will miss the friendliness, the log fires, good food and excellent beer!

The Castle Hotel holds very fond memories for my husband and me, we had our first date there back in 1981 after meeting at a Boxing Day party down the street in Deganwy! He was in the U.S Navy visiting family in the area and I was home from college. Then in 1985 we had our wedding reception there. We are celebrating our silver wedding next August. It's a shame it's closed down we would have liked to visit the next time we come home.

Visited Deganwy yesterday, 13/03/10 - very, very sad to see The Deganwy Castle Hotel closed........My family and I, particularly my parents have been visiting Deganwy and Conwy for many, many years - their memories and mine are and always will be amazing. The Deganwy Castle Hotel has obviously deteriorated over the years, but I firmly believe that the Hotel has been the 'HUB' of Deganwy for many residents and visitors alike and this will be lost.

What a great place. Stayed for five nights in april 1979 on our honeymoon, paid for by my father who knew the owner at the time, 'paddy' who he met whilst skiing in Oberau in Austria, food and accomodation top class. Mark and Jackie Nicholas, Coventry.
