HIGHWAYS staff have been working around the clock to keep Conwy’s main roads open during severe weather.

Conwy County Borough Council’s response is based on a policy, which has been in place for a number of years and prioritises the areas which are treated.

First Priority Routes such as the A55, A5, A470 Trunk Road, class one roads and other important county roads which provide access to towns and villages, will be treated first. The priority routes are approximately one third of the county’s road network.

According to the council the gritting of side and minor roads or the re-filling of roadside grit bins cannot be guaranteed in the circumstances.

Cllr Joan Vaughan, Conwy’s cabinet member for infrastructure, said: “Drivers, loaders, and engineers have all been working around the clock to ensure
arterial routes have been open. This has involved a significant commitment through the holiday period including several overnight gritting shifts “

Supplies of rock salt across the country are under pressure and we have placed orders to keep our stocks of salt topped up when supplies are available. However, there are sufficient stocks to continue with normal gritting routines on priority roads for approximately the next week. It’s expected that we will receive a 'drip-feed' of additional supplies to meet the needs of priority routes.”

The council has advised people to take notice of the conditions and take appropriate precautions and only travel if absolutely necessary.
