WOMEN from across Anglesey and Gwynedd will strut their stuff at Wales’ first ever pole dancing competition.
The North Wales Pole Dancing Competition sees 30 dancers compete on Saturday, February 20, to be named the region’s best.
Organiser Tracy Huckfield said the competition is a world away from pole dancing’s image as nightclub entertainment.
She said: “People have a very negative view of it, as strippers wiggling their bums in seedy nightclubs. But the sport is a combination of vertical gymnastics and dance - anything seen as erotic is forbidden.”
Competitive pole dancing is a growing sport, with a world championship and competitions held across the UK, but the event at the Colwyn Bay theatre is the first of its kind in Wales.
The competition has beginners, intermediate, advanced and professional classes and Tracy said pole dancing is a great way of keeping fit as well as a gruelling sport.
“Research shows it burns more calories than other forms of exercise, including kickboxing. People only realise when they see our professionals hanging from their toes how stressful it is on the body.”
Among the judges at the event will be international pole dance champion Karen Chaundry and Scottish champion Sally Giles.
Tracy added that next year’s event could include a men’s competition if there are enough entries.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to children’s charity, Happy Faces.
There are still places available. All competitors must be over 18 (16+ with full parental consent) and live in the North Wales area. Proof of address will be required on admittance.
The event will be held on Saturday, February 20 at Threatr Colwyn, Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay. Tickets are £10.
