Bells ring for special friend

BELLRINGERS will gather at the top of a Llandudno church tower to pay their respects to a popular volunteer.

Peter Goodwin, 74, from Mochdre, had been ringing the bells at Holy Trinity Church for 12 years. He died last week after a period of illness. He was one of the longest running bellringers at the church.

A group of six bellringers from Llandudno and Bangor will ring quarter peals in memory of their friend, in the evening after his funeral.

Stan Whittaker, a bellringer at the Mostyn Street church, said the memorial will last for 45 minutes. He said: “Everybody liked Peter. He was very reliable and we had some great laughs. We wanted to pay tribute to him.”

Peter’s wife of 25 years, Pauline, 60, will attend the tribute to her husband with her family.

Peter and Pauline ran holiday flats in Abbey Road, Llandudno for a number of years. After retirement Peter answered an advert in the local press to ring the bells. He was part of a band of bellringers, who volunteered to ring the bells in the church on New Years Day of the Millennium.

Pauline, a staff nurse at Glan Clwyd hospital, said: “He loved it. It was such hard work and he gave up a great deal of his time. He never wanted a fee, that would go to the church and he did alot of fundraising. It is hard, the bells are very heavy and he had to follow pattern sheets.

“He took part in bell competitions and there is even a plaque hanging in the church, because they won it one year. He practiced and worked hard,” she added.

Peter, who was a keen ballroom dancer and enjoyed holidays with his wife, leaves his four children and 16 grandchildren.

Pauline said: “He was a wonderful husband and well respected. He wanted a celebration of his life rather than a funeral and it is wonderful that the bells will ring for him.”

The funeral of Peter Goodwin will be held on Friday, February 5 at 10am at the Holy Trinity Church, Mostyn Street. The bell ringing memorial will take place at 7pm.
