MP pledges new public meeting over pier future

A SECOND public meeting will be held over the future of Colwyn Bay's Victorian pier.

David Jones MP met with Conwy County Borough Council's new chief executive Byron Davies to discuss the seaside town's decaying tourist attraction.

The pair held an informal meeting yesterday (Tuesday) as the Pioneer went to press, with Mr Jones pledging ahead of the talks to call another public meeting on the pier.

He said: “It will be an informal meeting with Mr Davies. I want to find out what the legal position is and what the status of the council’s legal proceedings against Mr Hunt are.

The next step will be to call a further public meeting with a view to get a steering group together with a view to setting up a charitable trust.”

Hundreds of residents packed into Colwyn Bay Town Hall last month for a meeting chaired by Mr Jones with an overwhelming majority in favour of restoring the pier.

Suggestions included a charitable trust or a scheme similar to that of Bangor Pier with residents sponsoring a plank to raise money for the restoration.

There is a complex legal dispute between pier owner Steve Hunt and Conwy County Borough Council with the pier in the hands of administrators Royce Peeling Green after Mr Hunt was declared bankrupt.
