ORGANISERS of a world rally championship have scooped top awards.

The Hunter and Lewis Cambrian Rally, which started and finished in Llandudno last October, attracted competitors from across the globe.

Organisers of the event, North Wales Car Club, secured two prestigious awards during a recent ceremony.

The event was voted Rally of the Year 2009 by members of the association of North Western Car Clubs (ANWCC) and has also had a similar accolade from the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs.

The ANWCC awards were held at the Holiday Inn Hotel at Manchester Airport. Claire Thomas, a secretary of the 2010 Cambrian Rally, received the McGivern Trophy on behalf of the organising committee from Alan Dean-Lewis of the Motor Sport Association.

Alyn Edwards, events clerk of the course, said: “The WRC teams who used the event as a shakedown for the Rally GB were all very complimentary about the event and said the facilities and organisation were on a par with anything they experience anywhere in the world, and it seems that club competitors agree with them."

The 2009 Cambrian rally was won by Norwegian World Rally Championship (WRC) competitor Mads Ostberg. Fans also had the thrill of seeing World Rally Championship runner-up, Abu Dhabi Ford works driver, Mikko Hirvonen, powering through the Clocaenog and Penmachno forests to clear the route for competitors.
