'Keep our road safe'

CHILDREN at a Llandudno primary school are taking action against inconsiderate motorists putting their lives in jeopardy.

Speeding and illegal parking along Dyffryn Road has prompted pupils at Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn to start a campaign to urge local road users to drive safely when near their school.

Teacher Nick Evans said the decision to start the campaign came directly from the children.

He said: “It started by looking at how we could develop a bit of our local environment. The children came up with the idea of looking at our school gate environment. When going home, they wanted to make it safer.”

Mr Evans explained how potentially dangerous driving outside the school gate had risen in recent months, and although there had been no incidents, the pupils wanted to see it stop.

"The problem we have is at home time and when the children come to school. The parents and taxi drivers dropping them off park on the zigzags and speed along Dyffryn Road itself.

“We’ve planned some posters and some banners which we are looking for a local firm to maybe help us print. We have also involved the police and the road safety department of Conwy Council.”

The school hope a large banner along their wall will help to remind motorists to take care.

Mr Evans added: “Some parents and some taxi drivers seem not to be aware. Some taxi drivers park off from the zigzags in the middle of the road which is even more of a danger. There are 20 metres of zigzags. It’s says Keep Clear as well but we still get people parking right outside of the school gate. And the speeding is certainly in excess of 30mph.”
