FORGET painting the town red, Denbighshire County Council is now painting Denbigh pink!

Love it or hate it, but you probably won't have missed the new brightly coloured addition to Vale Street in Denbigh on the corner of Post Office Lane.

As part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative Denbighshire County Council painted the large historic building pink and red at the end of last year.

The ground level in the property is home to Jones & Graham Accountants & Registered Auditors and the first and second level are flats.

A spokeswoman for Denbighshire County Council said: "The external envelope of the property was in poor condition with leaking roofs and render falling off and looking in general disrepair.

"The original shopfront had been replaced with an aluminium shopfront which is inappropriate in a conservation area. The owners approached both the Denbigh and Rhyl THI and Denbighshire County Council's Housing and Area Renewals to assist with grants to renovate the property.

"A scheme was drawn up with the aim of restoring the building and reinstating the original architectural features and characteristics to conservation standards with information gathered from old photographs."

Grosvenor Construction Ltd carried out the £113,571 restoration work.
The spokeswoman added that it will be a significant improvement to Vale Street and the colours chosen are known to have been used historically and will brighten up the streetscene.

In Denbigh opinions are divided over the new design.

u Ann Hughes has worked at Crown Carpets, directly opposite, for 11 years is not happy with the paint job.

She said: "It's cheap and nasty and it's not in being with the main street of Denbigh, the other properties around are nicely painted. It looks like an amusement arcade.

"Denbigh is supposed to be a historic town and in the past, two shops that were not as brightly decorated were ordered to change their colour."

u Vale Street shopper Paul Jenner from Denbigh said: "I have no problems with pink, I can't say I have noticed it really, the reds quite dominant, there's no problem I can see."

u Barry Davies from Henllan was very disgruntled and said it was an 'absolute disgrace.'

He added: "It doesn't fit in anywhere, it looks like a rainbow road.

"It's a waste of money I don't know anybody who likes it."

Denbigh shopper Kerry Craydon said:"I like pink, I havn't really noticed it, it doesn't really offend me though."

Fellow shopper, Monica said: "I don't mind.

"I know it's very strong but when you see stuff that needs to be done up, at last they're making some sort of statement. I

"f you go to Brighton the colours there are worse.

"Go to anywhere in Britain you will see colour and to me its nice. It brightens the road up, I know it's garish but if it was all pink I would say no."

Another Denbigh couple for 35 years said it was 'awful' and 'horrible.'

"I don't know why they have done that colour there, it just glares at you.

"We're not at all keen.

"It doesn't go with the rest of the street.

"They worked so hard on it and now they have painted it that.

"They should have done it tastefully like Theatr Twn o'r Nant."
u Denbigh county councillor Gwyneth Kensler said she has taken on board people's negative comments and is contacting the THI.

"I think it's the bright pink that needs to be toned down.

"I don't think it's the colour that's traditionally used in Denbigh."

Cllr Kensler said the design of the building was nice but couldn't believe it would have been that colour in the past.
