POLL: Would you pay 7p for a plastic bag?

A PLAN for a levy on plastic bags has divided Leader readers.

Earlier this week we reported a compulsory charge of 7p per bag could be introduced in an effort to reduce the number of carriers being used in Wales.

If approved the measure, put forward by the Welsh Assembly Government, would come into force in Spring 2011.

The story has drawn a lively and mixed response from our readers.

Some praised the initative and said the charge would encourage people to use re-usable bags.

One reader suggested carrier bags should be banned altogether.

But another branded the proposed charge a 'useless idea'.

What do you think? Have your say in our Leaderlive poll.

Why don't they just return to using paper carrier bags? Also, if we're to pay 7p for a bag, do I get a 7p reduction off my bill? If not, I'll shop elsewhere. Like England.A more useful legistration would be to force companies to use degradable packaging, and much less of it,or have everything sold in recyclable glass or tins?

Last week we had a Kerbside caddy from the Council which included recylable bags which we will have to buy from supermarkets..... so why can't they use this type of bag especially for loose items such as fruit and veg.. and manufacturers could also be forced to use this kind of packaging... The Council seem to be leading the way on this !!

I have voted yes..but wont be paying a penny because I use Hessian bags that last 1000 times the life of a plastic bag that polutes landfills, and other places.

Plastic bags and their equally problematic cousin, the plastic container, were the invention of the supermarket for the sole purpose of ensuring we serve ourselves instead of them spending extra cash on more employees. What about having collection points at all supermarkets, then they could pay the fee for getting rid of it all out of their enormous profits, instead of us.

I'm a former resident of Mold now living in Western Canada. The supermarket I use stopped using plastic carrier bags quite a while ago, and now either use paper bags, or else shoppers can purchase reusable bags for 1 dollar each....
