REVIEW: Last Approach

ANGLESEY quartet Last Approach are bringing a hefty dose of rock with their debut release Above The Sonic.

Running between the amped adrenaline of opener Don't Carry to the smooth gentle-rock of Drift - complete with its anthemic, arm-swaying quality - the diversity of the well-produced album is obvious from the outset.

A delicate intro and peaceful verse which lulls the listener into an expectation of a soft and simple sound can soon descend into a guitar-thrashing, head-banging marathon as the group roller-coaster from one track to the next.

But where the band really shines is in their willingness to mix things up.

Shunning the usual verse-chorus-verse structure in favour of a more instrumental led track, Freakin' Out warps the conventions - and it works; showcasing the band's musical skill.

What give Last Approach a distinct edge is their unique sound, especially through their intelligent use of harmonies, to create an epic soundscape like no other on the local scene - no more so noticeable than in the album's stunning title track.

From the slow head-bobing of Unknown to the upbeat rhythms of Here I Stay, their accomplished release ticks boxes for all fans sheltered under the umbrella of 'rock'.

Whether you want to label the band shoegaze-emo, punk-rock or Americana-thrash, Last Approach's stunning debut is an album which demands repeat listening.
