THE closure of a book shop in the heart of Llandudno has seen in a surge of interest for a town manager.
The Publisher’s Book Clearance (PBC) store, which took over the former Woolworths site on Mostyn Street has now closed its doors, highlighting the raft of empty units in the town - some which have not been filled for more than 12 months.
Mayor of Llandudno, Ann Yates, said: “I walked by the other day, and it’s very very sad indeed. To have a long-standing store like Woolworths close and then different people try too.
"This is a prime position and I would like to see another store come in - one of the bigger companies if we could. These are the people we need to approach, who have the backing up and down the country, not a short term which filled the gap. Something like a Primark."
But Cllr Yates confirmed work was ‘constantly’ being undertaken by the town council to try and revitalise Llandudno, and one concept currently being pursued is the introduction of a town manager.
“We are working hard trying to get this town manager who can sort this out - if it comes to fruition - and to help bring it all together. We want local businesses to get in touch to let us know how they feel about a town manager here. I don’t see why we can’t have one - I think it would be a big success in Llandudno.”
Mike Learmond from the Federation of Small Businesses said Llandudno was struggling, but was sure the town could return to its former glory.
He said: “The top end of Mostyn Street is certainly starting to look beleaguered. I think the big issue for shopkeepers is a lack of suitable parking at that end of town. Everything is focussed on the Parc Llandudno end and many of those shoppers who do take advantage of the two hours free parking only make it halfway up the high street before turning back.
“Retailers, landlords and the local authority must work together to provide shoppers with convenience, choice and a unique shopping experience beyond the retail parks.
“Llandudno has fantastic shopping to offer and I believe it is still the ‘jewel in the crown’of North Wales, even if that crown is looking a little tarnished at the moment.”
