TRIBUTES have been paid to one of Colwyn Bay’s most colourful characters, who died today (Tuesday).

Known locally as Chris Heath, the 50 year-old homeless man became a well-known figure on the streets of Colwyn Bay town centre. After being taken ill, he was visited by paramedics shortly after 8.30am but was found dead at the scene.

Friends said Chris, also known as Fergal, leaves a son called Frank, who is believed to live in the Colwyn Bay area.

Andrew Yarlett, a member of Colwyn Bay's homeless community, paid tribute to his close friend minutes after he heard the news.

He said: "I am shocked. We slept in a doorway together last night and now this has happened. All that is left is his sleeping bag, a walkman and his book. I have lost my sleeping partner and I am very sad."

Chris’ affection among the people of Colwyn Bay was cemented in the1990s when he the inspiration for a band known as Frank’s Dad and graced the cover of their LP cassette.

A keen artist, Chris was particularly well known in the Penrhyn Road area of Colwyn Bay, including at Speakers Corner where he was a regular face.

Jason Diken, of Speakers Corner, said: "We are very sad. He was quite ill yesterday and my wife Holly gave him a full breakfast, but he didn't eat any of it.

“He was quite famous in Colwyn Bay. I am 28 and I can remember he has been on the streets ever since I can remember. He will be sadly missed. Holly is upset today."

Another tribute was paid by Ingrid Lewis, town manager.

She said: "He was a character about town. He will be sadly missed."

Paula Cannon, of The Pantry near Princes Drive, said Chris had regularly used the cafe.

She said: “He was a pleasant man, no trouble to anyone. He was really harmless. It's such a shame."

A spokesman for the Ambulance Service said a crew were called to the scene at 8.38am to a man of no fixed abode. He was found dead at the scene and the cause of death is not known.

North Wales Police said there are no suspicious circumstances and family members have been informed.

So very sad. Chris always made me smile. When my daughter was tiny he always semed to pop up at the right time to hold open shop doors when I was struggling with her pram. Once he gave my daughter a handful of polished coins because she was crying after putting her own coins in a charity box. His presence will be sadly missed. xxx

I moved here in 1984 and I remember seeing Chris then. Only saw him a week or so ago. He never caused any trouble. I wonder why he was on the streets? May he rest in peace.

I wonder why he was on the streets? May he rest in peace. .. Sad news as Chris was a familiar sight and I got to know him around the early 1990s. He was harmless, minding his own business with his drawings. But if you ever talked to him, it was clear that he was in need of some sort of psychiatric help. He was offered a room in a B&B, preferred to live life his own way, but it was a tough life to lead and last winter must have affected his health .
