THE final weeks of building work on the controversial Maesdu Bridge are currently underway.

Contractor for the project, Dawnus Construction Ltd, is in the process of lifting the nine tonne precast concrete parapet edge units into place; which are based on the design of the old bridge demolished late last year.

More than 14,000 tonnes of slate material has also been delivered to raise the ground levels at the site.

The bridge beams were lifted into position during an all-night operation at the end of May and the concrete road deck has been cast. The final road surfacing is scheduled to be laid on the bridge in mid-August.

Conwy County Borough Council has confirmed the new bridge is hoped to open to traffic on September 10, 2010.

Stuart Davies, Head of Highways & Infrastructure, said: “This project hasn’t been straightforward, but it was essential for long term access to Llandudno. Local people have been very patient despite the inconvenience and the delays caused by restrictions on working over the railway during the day and modifications to the design.”

Last week the Pioneer reported how traders and residents on both sides of Maesdu Bridge were "fed up" with the delays, with some shop-keepers slamming Conwy County Borough Council for failing to notify them of delays to the construction work.
