A HISTORIC church under threat of closure is inching closer to its fundraising goal.
The congregation of St David’s Church on Croes Atti Lane, Oakenholt, must raise £12,000 in rental charges or face having to travel to Flint to worship.
Since May devoted members and kind strangers have raised more than £3,000 which will pay the quarterly rent.
But according to churchgoer Kenneth Massey, the fight is constant.
He told the Leader: “What we were asked to do by the diocese was prove that we could be self-sufficient and clear our backlog of bills. If we can do that they will look at the situation again.
“We are month to month now in the black but it’s a constant effort to keep it going.”
More than £1,000 was raised at a summer fete earlier this month.
Quiz nights, coffee afternoons and zumba lessons in the church hall also provide a regular source of income.
Mr Massey is urging more people to become members of the church.
He said: “We have a weekly collection at the church service but it would be even better if we could get more people to come along.”
Supporting their plight is Oakenholt councillor Rita Johnson who has written to the Diocese of St Asaph.
She said: “There is a very real danger of ‘use it or lose it’ and this would be a real loss to our community.”
