A QUICK-THINKING resident alerted neighbours to a fire in a block of flats near Caernarfon.

Gwyn Roberts, of Caernarfon fire station, attended the fire on County Road in Penygroes at 4.17 am yesterday.

"A smoke alarm activated and alerted one of the occupiers who was able to knock on the occupiers of the other flat and they all escaped from the building

unharmed,” he said. “This incident highlights how smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death. If these people had not received the early

warning given by the smoke alarm, the fire could have developed very quickly and endangered all five lives.”

There was slight heat and smoke damage to the hallway. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
