GLORIOUS sunshine drew thousands of spectators to Colwyn Bay Cricket Club on Sunday for the first day of a week long festival of cricket at Penrhyn Avenue.

The Pro40 match between Glamorgan Dragons and Lancashire Lightning signalled the opening of the event, with the Lancashire side claiming an eight wicket victory on the day.

An estimated crowd of 3,500 turned up for the match, with fans travelling from South Wales and the North West of England for a taste of cricket in Colwyn Bay.
Glamorgan came in to bat first, and were set back early on by a series of quick dismisals, with the scoreboard reading five for 29 at one point.

But the Welsh side showed their fighting spirit to battle back into the match, as a sixth wicket stand worth 80 runs from Mark Wallace and Ben Wright took the Dragons past the century marker.

The dismisal of Wallace brought in Glamorgan legend Robert Croft, who added an unbeaten 53 from 37 balls as his side finished on 211 for nine from their 40 overs.
However, it proved to not be enough, as Lancashire’s Tom Smith, Karl Brown and Steven Croft smashed 186 between them to guide Lightning to victory in 37.2 overs.
Despite the loss for the home side, it proved to be an entertainin day’s cricket for the Penrhyn Road crowd.

The match followed a special Friday night Twenty20 game between Glamorgan and a North Wales XI captaiend by Colwyn Bay’s Sion Morris in aid of Glamorgan all-rounder Dean Cosker.

The festivities continue this week as Glamorgan take on Worcestershire in a four-day LV County Championship match, with tickets available on the door for each day’s action.
