COLWYN BAY suffered a second half collapse against an energetic Wrexham side which led to an embarrassing 5-1 defeat, leaving Dave Challinor with a number of questions ahead of their opening league fixtures.
The scoreline makes harsh reading for the Bay after a first half in which an experimental side maintained a good shape and passed the ball confidently.
"We did OK for most of the first half, but we've made basic mistakes for all the goals,” said Challinor.
“We are going to be playing in a very tough league and if we continue to make mistakes like that we will get punished.
“We didn't have our strongest side available, but you need to have confidence that your back up players will come in and do a job.
Lee Davey saw a shot tipped over the bar by Wrexham’s Chris Maxwell, as did the promising Damien Allen.
John Newby also went close, but it was Wrexham who made the breakthrough, with Bay born striker Marc Williams turning home a Curtis Obeng cross.
Christian Smith then chipped Colwyn Bay keeper Andy Metcalf from the half way for a stunning second goal seconds into the second half.
Mick McGraa smashed in a free kick to bring the Bay back into the match, but second half changes saw the Bay lose their shape.
Kevin Gall, Adrian Cieslewicz and Nick Rushton all took advantage as Wrexham completed a comprehensive victory.
"Today highlighted where we are short and we have got two weeks to try and address that," Challinor added.
