FIREFIGHTERS were called to Conwy last night (Thursday)  after an elderly lady fell asleep with the stove on.

A crew from Conwy were alerted to the property on Chapel Street at 8:41pm, by a neighbour who heard the woman's smoke alarm sounding.

The fire is believed to have started when the elderly lady fell asleep on her living room sofa after leaving food cooking in the kitchen.

Firefighters removed the food from the stove and vented the property, which was filled with thick smoke.

The woman received a precautionary check from paramedics at the scene.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have issued a warning about the dangers of leaving cooking unattended following five similar call-outs in the space of 24 hours earlier this month

Andy Lambert of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "This incident clearly highlights the importance of smoke alarms in the event of a fire - it was fortunate that a neighbour heard the smoke alarm sounding, immediately called for help and knocked on the door until the occupier awoke.
"Remember, never turn your back on your cooking, even for just a minute as a severe fire could quickly develop."
