Strange ailments diagnosed

CURIOUS conditions and unusual ailments were given a thorough inspection when the Embarrassing Bodies team visited Llandudno.

Doctors from the Channel 4 programme set up a temporary surgery on the promenade, where members of the public could come and share any strange illnesses with the team.

Talking after the visit to Llandudno, Dr Pixie McKenna told the Pioneer it was a successful day - despite the weather.

She said: "It was fantastic. We love Wales, simply because the Welsh are very warm and welcoming. I'd never been to Llandudno. We got caught in the middle of a rain storm and I ended up wearing a lovely black bin bag because I didn't have a coat! But there were some great, fantastic cases.
"People know who we are and know what we're about now. Three years ago we did the first truck stop and people thought we were weirdos. Now people are familiar with the programme and familiar with us, and feel more comfortable."

Embarrassing Bodies has become must-see TV by showing a wide variety of grizzly conditions, but for Dr McKenna, a case involving some in-growing toenails was a segment which resulted in people calling in to complain.

She said: "In the past we have had a lot of genitalia, but the one case I did which had people calling in was about in-growing toenails. This girl hadn't looked at her feet in years and she showered with socks on. We sent her for an operation to get the toenails removed which involves pulling them off. That got a lot of calls.
"[The show is popular] because we are all curious, we are all intrinsically nosey. We give people a taste of sitting outside a doctors door.
"Also I think people are genuinely fascinated by the human body. So many people go on the Internet and look up things and we do have some serious issues such as breast cancer on as well."

While filming continues for the new series, Dr McKenna urged anyone who may have an undiagnosed illness to get help.

She said: "'I don't want to bother my doctor' - that's what we hear all the time. Go and talk to your doctor. That's what we're all here for. The matter may be embarrassing, but in five minutes they can say if it is serious or not. Always ask for help."

  • Once again, the clinic is opening its doors and looking for new patients to treat in the new series of Embarrassing Bodies. If you have a medical condition that you’d like the doctors to look at then please contact the team on 0121 224 8395 or e-mail embarrassingbodies@mavericktv.co.uk
